Before you start, please read through the following information:
The City assumes no liability for your participation in this event; you participate entirely at your own risk.
You may choose where you like to focus your efforts; the City will not be assigning specific areas for clean-up. City Parks might not yet be open, so here are some suggestions for areas where you could work:
- Public Spaces in the City
- your own street or block
- the grounds of your workplace
- sidewalks and areas downtown
- around public buildings
- along trails (if open for use), ditches, gutters away from traffic
You can clean up in multiple areas, go out more than once, and go individually or as a group.
Safety Tips to note:
- Children should be accompanied by an adult; keep the kids safe.
- Wear protective gloves or use tongs to pick up garbage.
- Do not handle sharps or used needles; use tongs and place the item in a hard, sealable container.
- Take pictures of your clean-up efforts and email them to recreation@pembroke.ca with subject line “Earth Day Clean-Up” for a chance to win a prize. Photos must be received by 4:00 pm, April 26.
- Take the collected garbage home with you and put it at the curb on your scheduled garbage pick-up day.
- Work only in daylight hours and wear bright clothing so that you are visible to traffic.
- Watch for traffic and stay well to the side of any road; watch the kids.
- Wash your hands thoroughly when you get home.
A few more comments…
- Your participation in Pembroke’s Clean-Up Event shows that you care about your City and will help foster pride in our community.
- When people see litter on the ground, they are more inclined to not care and are more likely to add to the litter already there.
- In addition to this event, you are encouraged to pick up litter more than once a year. Pembroke has an Adopt-A-Street program where you can “adopt” one street or area and pick up litter once or on a regular basis. Call the Parks & Recreation Department at 613-735-6821 ext. 1501 to learn more.
- People will thank you for your efforts.
- You will feel good that you have done something for the Earth.
Check out websites or social media for the City or for Pembroke’s Beautification and Climate Action Committee for more ideas on helping the Earth.
Make Earth Day every day!
